The four family businesses subject to the USDA proposal are "producer-handlers." Only producer-handlers are subject to this new rule. Producer-handlers are dairy farmers who milk their own
cows and bottle their own milk for sale to stores and consumers. By
comparison, most of the milk sold today is brought to a central
processor from dozens or hundreds of farms. The milk from all these
farms is pumped into a tank or silo and then bottled. Not us. While we think that most consumers prefer milk from a single source like a producer-handler, there aren't many of us around. Since the 1960's, the number of producer-handlers in the United States has dropped from over 450 to less than 60 today. You can make a difference!
