Established in 1920, Smith Brothers Farms is still a family business after over eighty years of dairying. Five members of the Smith Family work in the operation and the stock of the farm is all family-owned. Approximately 50 percent of milk produced by Smith Brothers Farms is sold to Puget Sound residents via home delivery. This unique niche provides good jobs to approximately 60 independent distributors (milkmen) and an additional 110 farm employees. "All of our milk comes from our own cows. This allows us to provide a milk guaranteed to be free of growth hormones (BST) and milk which our customers tell us is better tasting than milk from the supermarket," according to president Alexis Koester, granddaughter of Smith Brothers Farms founder, Benjamin Smith. This producer-handler operation would be adversely affected by the proposed USDA amendments and likely would not continue their operations in their current form, if the regulations were changed.
